Tensions between Beijing and Washington are on the rise again — this time, over a diplomatic visit to Taiwan. China has accused the US of encouraging independence forces on the island, and has demanded an end to all official interaction. State Department official Keith Krach is due to attend a memorial service for former Taiwanese president Lee Teng-hui and meet President Tsai Ing-wen. Mr Krach is the second high-ranking US official to visit Taiwan over the last two months, following US Health Secretary Alex Azar’s trip in August.
